Saturday night for dinner I made a grilled chicken salad. Felt great making it. Felt great eating it. After the meal I was eyeing a large bag of chips sitting on the counter I’d bought a few days earlier. I paused, and remembered a suggestion from my coach. It went something like this.

When you’re considering a choice, ask yourself if you’ve ever regretted making the choice you’re about to make. If you have regretted it, then don’t do it again.

I’ve regretted eating an entire bag of chips in one sitting. Many times. I still very much wanted to tear open the bag and start scarfing down chips. But instead I repeated the question. “Have I ever regretted this choice?” Again. “Have I ever regretted this choice?” Again. “Have I ever regretted this choice?”

Yes.

So I sat in that regret for a moment. Then a funny thing happened. After about a minute, the urge for the chips started to weaken. Instead I opened the refrigerator and took out two strawberries. Much better.
